Regional Emerging Multicultural Leadership Experience (REMLE)

On Friday, June 16 at Indiana Tech University over 160 leaders from the Tri State area of Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky gathered for an Event hosted by the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne. The EMLE event is a national movement of the Y that focuses specifically on the development of multicultural leaders. The data from the national YMCA shows that 90% of CEOs within the YMCA movement are white. This event along with the multicultural leadership department at YUSA looks to develop top notch leaders of color so as opportunities become available, these leaders are ready to step into those jobs. The National Director of Multicultural Leadership Development (MLD) for the YMCA of the USA, Shanna Smiley was in town to present this data to attendees and to share the importance of attendance at the event for self-development, networking and growth of staff of color. The event also featured a keynote by President and CEO of the Cincinnati YMCA, Jorge Perez, one of about 20 total Hispanic CEOs of YMCAs in the nation along with 15 dynamic breakout speakers focused on topics related to personal development, employee resource groups, allyship and more! In addition to dynamic sessions, various local groups graced the stage with cultural presentations to encourage and uplift the attendees. Included were a jazz ensemble led by Alan Parr, City Movement with an inspirational opening, the Art Leadership Center and Folklor de mi Tierra Dancers at lunch and closing the event was Opera Singer, Andrea Salazar, from Heartland Sings.
