I began "bedazzling" in 2010 after seeing a pair of Swarovski covered Louboutin heels that cost almost $5000! I knew there was a way to reproduce the look myself. I was so excited that I had figured out how to make my own pair, that I began a YouTube page sharing some tips and tricks but mostly it was a way to show off all the things you could crystallize. From there I began getting requests from people all over the US who wanted to pay me for my services.

In 2013, Shining Soles was born and I began my journey as a professional strasser. Strassing is the art of taking individual rhinestones or crystals and using one of several application methods to apply them to any surface. Since then, I have made dozens of wedding shoes for brides, graduation caps for seniors, a life size Storm Trooper helmet, a Kueirg coffee machine, over 1200 rhinestone tumblers and a whole host of other one of a kind items for clients all over the world. One of my biggest accomplishments was being approached to create 150 custom tumblers for a Hollywood actress (NDA prevents me from divulging her name).

Coming from corporate America as a financial analyst, I never imagined being an artist let alone a thriving working artist. It gives me great pleasure to be able to offer luxury bespoke items that fit most budgets. Being a business owner has given me freedom to create my own schedule and show my children that success doesn't necessarily have to be a 9 to 5 climbing a corporate ladder. I've created my own ladder where there is no ceiling to stop me.

I count it an honor and privilege to own and operate not one, not two, but three different businesses. Let me not forget to mention that I am also a licensed Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. My husband and I own and operate Jackson Enterprises, which is home to Jackson Insurance Agency, Jackson Remediation and Restorative Services, LLC , and Jackson Tax Prep. Here at Jackson Enterprises we aim to be a household name by way of industry development in the areas of concentration which are insurance, construction, tax preparation, and real estate. Collectively our businesses have been in existence for over 13 years.

As a Black female business owner, I strive to not make excuses but rather find solutions for the individuals I serve. I had to learn to push through the fear of not succeeding, the fear of the unknown, and the fear of not feeling like I belong at the table. Now believing the words spoken by Booker T. Washington, "success is not measured by the position one has reached in life, but rather by the obstacles one overcomes while trying to succeed." And understanding that I couldn't allow the fear of the unknown to hinder me from experiencing a greater life than I've ever known. Now I don't care if anyone gives me a seat at the table, because I can just build my own table! That's the meaning of Black Girl Magic to me. Not waiting for any handouts or resting on where you come from to define where you are able to go, but instead apprehending that for which you were apprehended for and creating your own path to where you want to go with style and grace!

LegacyOne, Inc. was formally established in September 2015 as a corporate entity for its real estate and construction company. I am a licensed Indiana real estate broker, with a focus on residential and commercial real estate, the company is also a licensed general contracting company. While we work in any part of the city, our focus and passion is working with the residents in Southeast Fort Wayne. LegacyOne has worked extensively with the City of Fort Wayne’s Lead Paint Remediation program, which works to remediate lead hazards in older homes. The other community-based program that I am proud to be a part of is the Federal Home Loan Bank’s Neighborhood Impact Program (NIP) and its Accessibility Modification Program (AMP), that assists seniors and households with a disabled family members with home modifications that will allow them to remain in their homes as long as possible. As a general contractor we have done all types of construction projects.

What Black Girl Magic means to me is that it represents the strength, courage, resiliency, and fortitude of black women. Even though we have always been the backbone of our homes, churches, organizations, and companies we were kept in the background while our ideas, inventions, knowledge, time, talent, and treasure were what made these entities flourish and excel. Today, we are saying no more, God is saying no more. There is an “about face” taking place, where we have been at the back of the line, we are now coming forward, to be hidden and taken advantage of no more.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: Ecclesiastes 3:1.

Many individuals have a passion “to give services” in our community. But in order to accomplish this goal, assistance is needed with processing nonprofit formal documents, funding resources, and organizational management. I am really proud and honored to have helped many individuals to develop and expand their organizations for over 30 years. I believe, “service to others is the rent you pay for a room here on earth”.

As a Black female business owner, I love what I do… and feel blessed to work in a field that helps nonprofit businesses make our community a better place to live for so many people.

Brain Geeks Learn is the nonprofit educational service that I created during the pandemic, in 2020. BGL was born out of my experience as a child who struggled in school and needed tutoring. In addition, I saw the assistance that many families needed due to the new shift in education. BGL provides private and group tutoring and unique workshops for all students (K-12 and Adults). All services currently offered are in person or done virtually. The goal for BGL is to meet students, families, and educators where the challenges begin; helping to encourage students to be their best at all moments. The Southeast side of Fort Wayne is the first opportunity being tackled by our eccentric minds of BGL. The opportunity to meet the lacking gap of fun educational hands-on activities is our niche. I have so much up my sleeve and I am sure I’ll be able to accomplish all my educational goals- that is educational goals for my community and beyond.

My perspective on being a black business owner living in Indiana has been eye-opening. I see the lemons and the opportunity to make lemonade. I understand it’s my duty to work harder than the next. Seeking opportunity where it seems to not be found. Being a black woman business owner ties into Black Girl Magic; it’s not easy being stereotypically one thing to the world since birth while striving on what could not be done without the “magic” that only a black woman possesses. Black Girl Magic to me is the nerve to wake up in America and be the best I can be even when the world is not checking for me. Black Girl Magic is the audacity to be expected to do or say yet surprisingly rising to the top with strength only God could give. I am thankful to serve and I am thankful to be needed.

Davetta Chambers is the Founder and Executive Director of Litter Thinkers School of Early Learning. Little Thinkers goal is to make sure that the children of our community are prepared for the road that lies ahead. During this journey, the children receive our all-around approach to Pre-K education beginning with a personalized plan. We mix social interaction, physical play time, and personal development in equal parts with traditional learning.

We nurture and challenge each student so they can achieve their maximum potential. We believe emotional growth, intellectual maturity and social consciousness are the ultimate goals of a seasoned pre-school education. When a child is nurtured and offered various education challenges throughout his or her scholastic career a well-rounded “Little Thinker” is usually the happy result.

It brings me great joy and pride to be a black female business owner, leading by example with my black girl magic! When children see people who look like them leading, it lets them know they can lead, too. School was hard for me as a small girl and I want to help our future generations get started on better footing. The chances of future success are greatly increased when we have a quality pre-K education. What drives me is the desire for all our little girls and boys to have access to the tools they need for a solid foundation to succeed and lead!”

A & J Optical is one of Fort Wayne's newest optical boutiques where you can find your optician's optician to serve you with all your vision needs. Our goal is to provide affordable and fashionable frames with quality lenses. A&J OPTICAL is optician owned with 10 passionate years of optical experience. We pride ourselves with great customer service. I want to make everyone who purchases a pair of glasses smile, and those who see the glasses ask where they came from. Here at A&J OPTICAL we currently carry unique frames like Fort Wayne’s own Jaylon Smith’s and Jamal Robinson’s line/CEV, and A&J OPTICAL frames coming soon. We take most vision insurance. I also like to believe that we have the largest selection of state insurance frames to offer our patients with state plans.

Being a black female business owner is a true blessing and it is awesome! For me it’s the foundation for my kids. As a black female woman, I am looking to change the generational wealth in my family and A & J OPTICAL boutique is the 1st step to doing so. I have two black young ladies of my own and they see firsthand how to be a black women owned business owner. Having boundaries and understanding NO is a complete sentence is something I have learned during this journey of being a black woman owner, and I currently practice this on a daily basis teaching my girls about boundaries. Both my grandmothers would be so proud to have seen this vision played out. To be honest it has not been a walk in the park, there is so much more to this business than just frames, however, I love the challenge & I love what I do!

Black Girl Magic means everything to me. We are making a change one business at a time, doing things black women before us could not do. When I think of Black Girl Magic this list of affirmations comes to my mind:

We did it, We are great, We are confident, We will work for what we want

We can do anything we put our minds to, We can & will reach our dreams. Our voices matter

Being a black female business owner in this Community is a calling over my life I accepted over 10 years ago. I remember moving to Fort Wayne in 2001, and I did not see a lot of opportunities here. When I moved away to Indianapolis and began to meet peers that represented me, that were young like me and were business minded, it was so refreshing and inspiring. I knew that it was only right for me to return to Fort Wayne and begin to influence change and find other like-minded individuals like myself. The journey started out very lonely, being the only person of color at networking events, informational and training sessions. Now today I am so impressed and ecstatic for the amount of minority businesses that have been developed over the past 5 years. It is truly amazing!! As Black, female Business Consultant, I am intentional about sharing opportunities, information, resources and my platform to uplift minority small business owners. If you know, you know...I live by this!

Black girl magic represents excellence, mystery, culture, power, femininity, wisdom, influence, success, and accomplishment...these are just a few thoughts that come to mind. Given the fact that I am a statistic, but statically not where society says I should be; speaks volumes of what Black Girl Magic truly represents. We defy the odds.

Bring Black Up is a charity based nonprofit organization established in 2021. The mission is to engage, uplift, highlight and empower Indigenous people of color and Black creatives in Greater Fort Wayne. Our goal is to diversify and develop more business opportunities for BIPOC and IPOC to make a more creative economy and unified community for all people through inclusivity , cultural arts and social awareness projects.

Being a black woman & FW business owner makes me feel like I can conquer the world. Breaking barriers and walls down such as gender, race and stereotypes everyday is empowering especially, when you’re from Fort Wayne and coming from a life of struggle with no blueprint on how to succeed as an entrepreneur. The responsibility to lead by example can be exhausting but it definitely feels amazing to know you are established and in position to be a representative for other women in a world led predominantly by men. I hope to be an influence and inspiration to others proving that you can accomplish anything you’ve set your mind to, no matter your circumstances, gender, or race.

I plan to keep challenging myself and others to stay passionate and chase their dreams!

What Black Girl magic means to me is knowing and accepting who you are, and taking ownership for positive change in front of the world. It’s all about tapping into your divine feminine energy and being authentically, unapologetically, and courageously black and proud. I hope more women, especially women of color come out of their comfort zones and work together more as a collective to advance the next generation of young leaders.

Being a black female business owner makes me feel accomplished and "on-top." Though because I am black, and a female I am aware of the race and gender inequities. Being a black female business owner comes with adversity, including me being so young, but because I know that I am possible, I know I can overcome them. Being a black business owner also comes with negativity, hard times, and challenges, but being a black female business owner makes me feel purposeful. Being a black female business owner in this present time, I understand that I must remain ambitious, confident, and strong.

We are a certified WNBA and FIBA agency representing professional athletes in their respective sports and college athletes with NIL representation.

Being a black female business owner is tough and it’s challenging. There are barriers that still need to be broken for the generations that are following behind us especially as a black woman that is a sports agent in a male dominated sports industry. It is also powerful and a statement that any black female business owner can do whatever they put their minds to. There are no limitations to what a black female can do. There is room for all of us at the table. Being a black female business owner means creating opportunities for those in my industry and in my community to help lead and guide them in the right direction and show them that they too can have a seat at the table.

Black girl magic to me means royalty, excellence, positivity, empowerment, becoming opportunists, creating a legacy and a space for not only ourselves but the black female business owners behind us. Celebrating every inch of ourselves and each other's beauty and intellectual prowess. It means doing everything they said we couldn’t do.

Being a black female business owner was not my goal in life, but God had his own plan for me and I am grateful. I have always been a hard worker and running a business requires nothing less. At times it is frustrating because people may not see or understand the vision of the business. But a woman that walks in her purpose doesn't have to chase people or opportunities, you're always placed in the room with the greats.

Black girl magic to me means the art of wholesome, unbothered, unapologetic dopeness that every black woman/girl radiates. Every girl embodies her internal and external beauty, as well as showcase the purpose God the creator blessed

Young Scholars Academy
cookyerutledge@yahoo.com

While attending school in Boston, I was impressed with the number of my friends who had been oriented to college life at a young age. Additionally, they were intentional about presenting a variety of schools to their children as options for their future. When I moved to Fort Wayne and began working in a public school I noticed that not many of my students had a clear understanding of the advantages of attending college, nor how to initiate the college admissions process. So, in August 2012, I partnered with Dick Waterfield, local businessman and philanthropist, and Jonathan Hancock, former Head of Canterbury School, to provide these services to students in Fort Wayne and surrounding suburbs. In 2013, we interviewed and selected our first cohort group for Young Scholars Academy.

The Academy exists to help highly motivated students discover the benefits of obtaining a college education; successfully navigate the college admissions process; matriculate to the college of their choice; and discover their inner greatness to change the world. Our students attend the illustrious Indiana colleges, as well as out of state schools such as University of Southern California, Duke University, and Penn State. They participate in Sister Cities, which has allowed groups of them to travel to Germany and Japan. On hot summer days you can catch Young Scholars performing caddie duties at Fort Wayne Country Club. This special program provides networking opportunities, monetary gain, and most importantly, the opportunity to apply for full four-year tuition scholarships to IU and Purdue Universities.

Young Scholars is my ministry, my calling, and my purpose. I know that I was born to play a role in helping young people become college educated. What does this have to do with "Black Girl Magic!"- everything!!!! I keep photos of Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells, Sojourner Truth, and my mother, Joanna Taylor, on my wall at home. Whenever I feel the weight of my vision, I remember all that each of these "Super-heroines" have done; then, I say a short prayer and get back to work. I will not let them down!

The nonprofit organization that I established in 2021 is called Mind of a Growing Woman IB Inc (MOAGWIB) and it services single parents (male and female) with resources they need for their individual situation to help them advance in life and escape poverty. That is our main goal and mission. We are a One Stop Shop Resource Center to help point parents in the right direction.

My experience as a black female business owner has been interesting. I have noticed that being in the field of real estate there has been a plethora of information shared with me. But in the world we live in today in 2022 information is much more easily accessible and is being shared on major platforms from people that look just like me. That makes me very proud!

My real estate business, Thirkles Real Estate LLC provides funding, budgeting assistance, property management, short term rentals and air bnb's. We service individuals looking for funding from $10,000-$400,000 for business or personal needs. We also help individuals with their personal budget. The name Thirkles is a family name and I plan to grow this business substantially and incorporate my family members so that we can all leave a legacy for the generations to come.

To me, black girl magic means reaching backwards and helping others. Helping others realize their power, potential and worth. It means leading by example and striving to be the best person that I can be by achieving my goals, healing old wounds and addressing past traumas. It means showing my daughter, other young black girls and even black women of my age that it is possible to be successful no matter what your past is nor the color of your skin. I don't have to change the world but If I plant the seed and it helps just one, that is success to me.
