ACPL’s Rolland Center Unveils New Exhibits for 2024

The Allen County Public Library invites the community to explore three new exhibits at the Rolland Center for Lincoln Research located at the Main Library. The exhibits opened to the public January 29.

The new exhibits feature photographs, artifacts, and digital archives related to three key Lincoln-era topics including:

The Battle of Gettysburg and its Aftermath

Featuring photographs, postcards, and fine art lithographs, guests can view items commemorating the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery and celebrating President Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address honoring soldiers who lost their lives at the legendary battle.

Indiana’s Civil War Soldiers

Starting with their enlistment to memorial events after the war, discover stories about Hoosier soldiers’ wartime experiences. Through photographs, letters, and fine art lithographs, visitors will gain an intimate view of life as a soldier from Indiana.

Wartime President

Learn about President Lincoln as a wartime president and explore the choices that he made during the bloodiest war in American history. View images of Lincoln’s various generals, Lincoln-signed documents, and items outlining his war powers.

“The legacy of the Civil War and Lincoln’s presidency continues to influence our world today,” said Senior Lincoln Librarian Jessie Cortesi. “At the Rolland Center, we believe that putting history front and center helps our community connect to the past and consider how history can inspire us to make a positive impact on the future with our actions today.”

The public can view the collection, which is updated and curated regularly by expert Lincoln Librarians, at the Library’s Main Branch (900 Library Plaza, Fort Wayne) during Rolland Center hours. There is no cost to visit.

Embassy Theatre Partners with Local Restaurants for Dinner & A Show!

The Embassy Theatre has partnered with 26 local restaurants to offer patrons a memorable Fort Wayne experience. Dinner & A Show!, an Embassy Theatre initiative, incentivizes Embassy ticket holders to patronize area restaurants before or after ticketed Embassy stage performances. Embassy ticket holders will receive special pricing or discounts at select dining locations by showing their Embassy digital or paper ticket on show day.*

Embassy shows are often accompanied by gathering before or after. Given the economic impact the organization already has on the community, there is clear symbiotic relationship that develops when the organization’s patrons are encouraged to visit local businesses to enrich the experience and memories

made on show days. Supporting local restaurants helps everyone meet challenging revenue goals while

offering patrons a much appreciated deal on their dining or drinking experience. A complete list of participating dining locations and their respective offers can be found at www.fwembassytheatre.org/restaurant-partners.

For more information about this collaboration or to learn how your restaurant can partner with the Embassy Theatre, please contact Crissy Moloney, marketing director, at crissy@fwembassytheatre.org.

The Race Card Project

The Fort Wayne Urban League’s is excited to announce our partnership with “The Race Card

Project”; created by journalist Michele Norris in 2010. Michele Norris is on a tour now promoting her new book, “Our Hidden Conversations,” and is continuing to invite people, across the country, to distill their thoughts on the word race to only six words. We are excited to have the opportunity to contribute to this important work.

A Press Conference, with the help of Greater Fort Wayne, will take place at the Fort Wayne Urban League Thursday, February 1st, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Aisha R. Arrington, President & CEO, will encourage others to share their own experiences and personal stories. Several community leaders are prepared to take the mic during the press conference to share their six-word race card. Arrington believes, “It’s truly an opportunity for us all to be a little vulnerable during Black History Month, dig a little deeper, and learn from each other.

Everyone has a race story and everyone’s story matters.”

Details include:

1. The press is welcome to come set up a little early beginning at 10:45 a.m.

2. The press conference will begin promptly at 11 a.m. and after the conference, reporters may interview FWUL Board members & community leaders who can explain their chosen six words and what those words mean to them.

3. An announcement will be made of the 6 physical locations (locations will be located at both YMCA and Library locations) where the public can fill out their race card or a QR code that can be scanned for the six words to be shared electronically.

The beauty of this project is that it’s not a test to pass or fail. It’s real. It’s truth. It’s what makes us who we are. “Let’s do this together – let’s talk about race,” Aisha R. Arrington.
