Black Homeownership Event

Would you like to close the black homeownership gap? Does the thought of homeownership intimidate you? Or do you simply have questions about homeownership? Then you need to attend the FREE Black Homeownership “Everyone Wins 2.0” Event on Thursday, October 20th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at The IMPACT CENTER 3420 East Paulding Road in Fort Wayne.

The Event will be highlighted by statewide experts explaining down payment assistance programs and a panel of local lenders and realtors guiding you through the process of obtaining a home. Those same lenders will be on hand to discuss special purpose loan programs, grants that are available, and answer any other specific questions that you may have pertaining to the housing industry. Stop paying rent and see how you can get into a home of your own.

Refreshments and snacks will be served. Presented by the Realist Association of Northeast Indiana. Sponsored by the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

2022 Faces of the Fort Mural

Fort Wayne residents Ephraim Scott Smiley III and Omowalé-Kétu Oladuwa are featured on a new mural at 520 W. Jefferson Blvd, the wall faces the downtown Starbucks.

The Faces of the Fort Dedication was unveiled on Thursday, October 6, 2022.  The Public Art Commission’s initiative is to elevate civil rights and social justice stories of long standing residents of Fort Wayne through large-scale murals. The theme of the downtown mural surrounds those who engage with and serve Fort Wayne’s youth.

Local artist Michael D. Johnson created the mural.

Faces of the Fort is a public art project initiated by the Fort Wayne Public Art Commission.

If I could sleep peacefully, then I needed to do something in Fort Wayne to make sure that all those that are in neighborhoods like the one I grew up in could sleep peacefully as well,”

Ephraim Scott Smiley III.

There are four total murals for the project around the Fort Wayne area and all four recognize different past and present faces of the community. You can learn more about the Faces of the Fort project, including the mural locations, on the Fort Wayne Community Development website.

Cinema Center-Hobnobben Film Festival

The annual Hobnobben Film Festival occurring October 13-16, connects filmmakers, film lovers, and the film-curious by illuminating the kaleidoscope of human experience through storytelling that projects ideas, conversations, and relationships beyond the cinema walls. Check out the website for the schedule! https://hobnobben.org/

Join the kickoff of Hobnobben 2022 on October 13 at the Opening Night Reception! It all starts with yummy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and assorted hoopla in the Spectator Lounge. Then in the main theater, we’ll showcase six shorts all by local or Indiana filmmakers, followed by an Indianapolis-produced feature film: It Happened One Weekend.

Hobnobben. It's more than a film festival. It's a celebration of the human experience through cinematic storytelling. Now in its seventh year, the Hobnobben Film Festival is an annual fundraiser for Fort Wayne Cinema Center, a not-for-profit arts organization. Each year, we invite filmmakers, film lovers, and the film-curious to experience heart-changing cinema over four glorious days in October.

At Hobnobben, we encourage people to "See and be seen." By showcasing diverse stories and voices that have been typically excluded, we're able to curate a one-of-a-kind festival that invites participants to see themselves represented on screen — and be seen by others. We shine a light on historically marginalized stories and creators in film: LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, people of color, women, international voices, seniors, non-White/Western, body positive stories, and the quirky/campy.
