Events in Color was planned as an event to showcase the city’s deep well of African American entrepreneurs. Organizer Tee Cook, a wedding planner, started the event “to try and unite, promote, and empower black businesses in our community.”
The book-selling business, Shenita’s Usborne Books & More Books, was in attendance. Shenita sells books for children and young adults of all ages. “You can purchase [the over 1800] books at events like these or online.”
“I wanted to have an event in an upscale location and to show community that we are here,” Cook said. However, Cook’s plans ran into some unforeseen hiccups. She started out with 32 vendors. But “had 10 cancelations in the last 24 hours. I’m going to keep going. I did this for my community. I did this for us. I am Rastafarian by religion, and I believe in unity. If it’s five of us in a room, I’m going to keep going.”
