Mother’s Day 2025

Mothers Day is typically a celebration of the moms or mother figures in our lives or our own journey as a mom. Within this journey can be both joy and pain based on our experiences with our moms but also our own journey of motherhood.
As I prepare to celebrate my own mother for Mothers Day, I think of the Bible verse in Exodus 20:12 as the 5th commandment: Exodus 20:12 NIV - “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
This is the only one of the Ten Commandments with a promise that if you honor your parents your days may be long on the earth. As we honor our parents, that may include respecting them, showing compassion, being forgiving and more.
As I have gotten older, I thoroughly recognize that parents are also humans and make mistakes as they are raising us. As a parent myself now, it has become more real to me that I don’t know everything and that parenting children is always a process of learning and growing especially as we look to do the right things for our children.
Proverbs 31 is a main scripture reference for women of virtue. Verses 25-31 always make me smile:
25 - She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
26 - She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 - She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 - Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29 - “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”
30 - Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 - Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
What powerful words written by Solomon with other contributors. When I read this I also reflect on the strength of mothers but also the responsibility to care for those around them and their household. The best part is the blessings received but also the reminder to fear the Lord.
There are plenty of verses in the Bible about Mothers, here are a few others:
Isaiah 66:13
“As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”
Proverbs 1:8:
“Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching."
Luke 2:51-52
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
Mothers and mother figures are blessings and despite our experiences hopefully we can reflect on positive times and/or create positive experiences in the future. May God bless us all and special prayers for those missing mothers, mother figures and children.
