Due to the number of new cases and a rising positivity rate, Allen County’s COVID-19 status has gone from blue to yellow.

Yellow is the second-lowest risk category and means moderate community spread. Dr. Matthew Sutter, the county’s health commissioner, told the Journal Gazette that he does not have any plans to change any of the county’s recommendations.

Southeast Fort Wayne continues to be one of the most vulnerable areas in Allen County, according to Surgo Ventures’ COVID database.

The database (precisionforcoviddata.org) overlays indicators of social vulnerability, such as socioeconomic status or language barriers, with indicators of vulnerability unique to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as access to healthcare and comorbidities among the population.

As for Tuesday, July 20, 13,530 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19; 693 of those are from Allen County. Another 428 probable deaths have been reported based on clinical diagnoses in patients for whom no positive test is on record.

Most of the positive new cases are coming from the 20-59 demographic, which, as of July 20, accounts for 63.5% of positive cases. However, more than three-fourths of the deaths have been people over 70.

African Americans account for 8.2% of the state’s COVID-19 deaths; African American’s represent 9.8% of the population.
